John Carroll, who turned Oceanside High into a state football power, has announced his retirement as the team’s coach.

Carroll informed the players Wednesday afternoon of his decision.

Carroll coached 26 years at Oceanside, leading the Pirates to a 248-75-6 record.

Under his leadership, the Pirates played in 22 straight San Diego Section semifinal games and won 13 San Diego Section titles, including this season when the team was 14-1.

Carroll’s teams won state championships in 2007 and 2009 and was runner-up this season, losing to Folsom in the state Division I title game.
