The Oceanside High School Foundation honored graduating seniors with more than $8,000 in scholarship money to continue their education at the next level at the May 25th Awards Ceremony. The 2016 Oceanside High School seniors were presented with their scholarships from Larry Hatter (OHS Class of 1962, member of the OHS Foundation) and Laurie Nelson Boone (OHS Class of 1968, VP of the OHS Foundation). Let’s meet the OHS Foundation Scholarship Winners!
OHS Foundation Scholarships
Monika will be attending San Diego State University, majoring in Physical Therapy.
Jenefer will be attending Cal State University-San Marcos to study Kinesiology. She participated in the AVID program for 6 years and has a 3.4 GPA.
Wally Hatter Memorial Scholarship
Evan has worked diligently in school taking courses that will help him pursue his dream of becoming a high school mathematics teacher. He has a great attitude and willingness to work hard and help others. Evan is quite the class leader and eagerly approaches any educational opportunity that arises. He plans to attend MiraCosta College and then transfer to a four-year university to continue his education.
Larry Hatter Scholarship
Involvement is what describes Lucia. Throughout her high school years she has taken on numerous roles with enthusiasm and dedication. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Vice President of the OHS Senior Class, represents OHS at the school board meetings as a Youth Ambassador, and volunteers at the Oceanside Public Library. Lucia is also the recipient of a Questbridge scholarship, has a 4.1 GPA and is headed to Notre Dame University to study Biology in order to pursue her dream of becoming a pediatric physician working with the disadvantaged population.
Rita Mazzarella Gray & Robert Gray Memorial
Carina will start off at Palomar college and major in Health Sciences and Criminal Justice. She has participated in the AVID program for 6 years and has a 3.6 GPA. Carina also, received the MLK Scholarship and was awarded a Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Scholarship sponsored by Qualcomm. In April, Carina was part of the OHS Robotics team who took 5th place overall in the 2016 Greater San Diego Robotic Tournament. This summer, she will be interning for 6 weeks at Scripps Encinitas Hospital.
Robert Kitchin Memorial Scholarship
Ciara will attend UC Santa Barbara this fall, majoring in English. She has a 4.0 GPA and participated in the AVID program for 1 year.
Yaritza will be starting at MiraCosta College this fall.
Billie Warner Memorial Scholarship
Jingying is this year’s Salutatorian with a 4.2 GPA and will be attending UCSD to study Mechanical Engineering. She has participated in the AVID program and is 2016 AVID Senior Standout. She als received the Ford Scholarship and was awarded a Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Scholarship sponsored by Qualcomm. Upon graduation, her plans are to pursue a career in product design & development or continue her education in research. Her best friend at Oceanside High, Xochitl Santiago Diaz is the 2016 OHS Valedictorian and she will be attending UCSD to study Mechanical Engineering, as well.
Evelyn will be heading south to attend Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida, pursuing a nursing major.
Ray Lambson Memorial Scholarhsip
Rachelle has a passion for music after learning to play the violin in the fourth grade and has discovered her love for singing in high school. She is in the soprano section as a member of the OHS Concert Choir. She’s a well-rounded individual who has participated on the OHS swim team, cheerleading squad, Gerard prep program, and AVID program. She plans to major in music and become a music teacher and has hopes of becoming a professional performer.
Ozelle Lewis Scholarship
Samantha will be the first in her family to attend college. She is described as determined, intelligent, honest, positive, kind and independent by her teachers. She is mature beyond her years. Samantha will attend Cal State University-San Marcos, majoring in Pre-health. She participated in AVID for 2 years and has a 3.6 GPA.
W.H. “Chick” Menching Memorial Scholarship
Kenneth is very involved in OHS and community. He plays football and baseball, involved in the College Bound program, is an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Club, and considered a role model in the AVID program since joining his sophomore year. As an active participant at his church, Kenneth participates in numerous outreach events that serve the community of Oceanside.
Kenneth will be attending MiraCosta College for two years, with plans to transfer to UCLA or Cal State University – Los Angeles. His major is Film Production with a career goal of being a film producer.
Ben E. Lewis memorial Scholarship
Elizabeth plans to pursue a career in sales or business management. She has excelled at OHS, been a part of the OHS Marching Band, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Full Orchestra and Drumline. She has been very involved in the Girl Scouts for many years, embracing the qualities and ideals it exemplifies. In 2015, Elizabeth participated in the Miss Teen Oceanside Beauty contest and won Outstanding Achievement award (Teen Division).
Fosnot Community Service Award

She has participated in the AVID program for 6 years and has a 3.6 GPA. Theo has been awarded a full ride military scholarship.
Miss Teenage California Scholarship
Carlie is heading north, to Brigham Young University-Idaho. She has a 3.8 GPA and participated in the AVID program for 1 year.
