Recognizing a Couple of Pirates in the National Football League
Oceanside High is a proud school of many prominent alumni who are tremendously successful and high contributors in their fields. As a known dominance historically in athletics, there are few schools with the consistent excellence that the Oceanside High football program has displayed over many decades. As we watch football this season, get to know a couple of our former Pirate football players who are currently in the NFL!
Brian Schwenke, Center, Tennessee Titans #62
Oceanside High School – Class of 2009
Brian Schwenke was born in Waukegan, Illinois in 1991, he grew up in Hawaii and San Diego as his father served in the US Navy. He attended OHS and played football for the Pirates, rated at the No. 44 offensive guard prospect in the country by Rivals.com his senior year. He attended the University of California, Berkeley and played for the Golden Bears from 2009 to 2012.
He was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2013, where he is currently on the active roster as a center.
Schwenke, who began wearing braces on both knees this offseason to prevent injuries, said he’s healthy at the start of camp. “I feel good, feel ready to roll,’’ he said.
He’s looking forward to doing his job this season in front of quarterback Marcus Mariota. Leading up to camp, the players hung out at a pool party, and at a BBQ. “It was enjoyable to get Marcus out of the building and hang out with him a little bit,’’ Schwenke said. “He’s a great guy. He’s a professional and everything he works for is about football.”
Best of Luck to Brian Schwenke, Pirate for Life!
Larry Warford, Offensive Guard, Detroit Lions #75
Oceanside High School, Freshman & Sophomore Years (2009-2011)
Larry Warford III was born in Oceanside in 1991, to an African American father and a Samoan mother. He attended Oceanside High through his sophomore year and had already earned the starting job at offensive tackle. Warford’s father retired from the US Navy sending his family to Richmond, Kentucky where Warford graduated from Madison Central High. He attended the University of Kentucky and was picked by the Detroit Lions in 2013 NFL Draft where he currently is an offensive guard. Warford started all 16 regular-season games as a rookie Detroit Lion in 2013, played throughout 2014, however, the Lions’ best offensive lineman the last two seasons, has not practiced since injuring his ankle in a Week 2 preseason game at Washington.
Warford has been named on the The Polynesian Football Hall of Fame watch list announced September 15, 2015, for the inaugural Polynesian Pro Football Player of the Year Award. The award will recognize the most outstanding professional football player of Polynesian Ancestry.
Best of Luck to Pirate Larry Warford!
A great read with Rick Gerardi, OHS offensive line coach heading it up, from an article written prior to the 2013 NFL Draft.
